Why Choose a Local Florist Over Supermarkets for Your Floral Needs

The Truth About Flower Pricing
Florists like myself often get a bad rap. Many people think we overcharge for flowers, especially when they compare us to supermarkets. But let me share a little secret. The truth lies on the floor of my studio. Let me explain.
Flowers come from growers and wholesalers in bunches containing 5 or 10 stems. This applies to both florists and supermarkets. However, supermarkets have a different approach.
Supermarkets strip these bunches down and repack them after removing about one-third of the stems. So, a 10-stem bunch of roses now contains only 7 stems, and a 5-stem bunch shrinks to just 3. The removed stems are then repacked to create new bunches of 7 and 3. You still get charged for a full bunch of flowers, but you have to take whole bunches, regardless of what they may contain.
The Processing of Flowers
When I receive my bunches of flowers, they go through a careful process called processing. This step is crucial. I remove all damaged, broken, bruised, or dead flowers from the bunches. Even the best-cared-for flowers can have broken heads, malformed blooms, or wilted stems.
What happens to the rejected flowers? They end up on my studio floor as green waste. Only premium flowers make it through the processing phase. This means you don't pay for any flowers that aren't perfectly fresh or are damaged.
In contrast, when you buy a "cheap" bunch from the supermarket, you take it as it comes. You might find bruised, broken, or wilted flowers mixed in. Many of us have experienced the disappointment of opening a supermarket bouquet, only to discover that only one or two stems are perfect and usable.
A Closer Look at Supermarket Flowers
Get your investigator hat on! Go check my statements by inspecting supermarket flowers. Count the stems and look at the number of damaged flowers in each bunch. You might be shocked by what you find.
